Desk Research Report: Mindfulness Apps
We are excited to announce the successful completion of our desk research on mindfulness mobile applications as part of the WellbeingInSchools project.
This crucial phase of the project aimed to analyze existing mindfulness-based apps to inspire the design and development of our own digital tools, including the upcoming WellbeingInSchools mobile app. The research offers valuable insights into best practices and gaps in the current digital landscape of mindfulness resources, particularly in relation to lower secondary education school students and teachers.
Research Overview
A total of 17 mindfulness and meditation apps were reviewed in depth. These included popular platforms such as Calm, Headspace, Smiling Mind, and Insight Timer, as well as region-specific apps from across Europe. The evaluation focused on features such as:
- Accessibility and inclusivity
- Content types and delivery models
- Engagement and personalization tools
- Community and support options
- Technical capabilities (e.g., offline access, multilingual support)
The findings were gathered through app trials, ensuring a comprehensive and practical assessment.
With the research phase complete, our team is moving forward with designing the app prototype. In the coming months, we will also publish a journal article about our desk research. During the first months of project implementation and in parallel with the research on apps, our partnership reviewed numerous journal articles on mindfulness programs for children, teenagers, and teachers.
Stay tuned for updates on our progress and the first materials of our work.
